What is Friluftsliv?

Frilufstliv is a Norwegian philosophy that can be traced back to the Romantic movement in Europe, but its roots go much deeper.  It translates to “free air life” or “ the simple life in Nature”. To Norwegians, Friluftsliv can be as simple as going for a short walk outside without headphones, or it could be an outdoor run or hike for fitness.  It can also involve long stretches in the wilderness backpack or climbing with only oneself and their group to rely on and assist each other.

How We Practice and Teach Friluftsliv

  • The underlying goal of the Friluftsliv program is for participants to beyond a superficial acquaintance with Nature to a place of belonging and confidence. This more intimate experience of the natural world helps students to better understand and respect themselves, others and all of Nature.

  • In order to do that safely, we must be prepared, and this is a big part of the curriculum. Expedition planning, navigation, proper gear and clothing, and many other topics are taught and practiced in a real outdoors setting.

  • Our time in Nature is a also a perfect opportunity for us to introduce and teach many other topics such as ecology, geography, hydrology, and biology of our beautiful mountain home in Summit County.

  • Our Friluftsliv program prepares one for a lifetime of independent, safe, and meaningful outdoor experiences. Beyond instruction in necessary skills and knowledge, Friluftsliv also prepares us to be in better touch with ourselves, each other, and all of Nature, as a way of life.

Preserving Friluftsliv

A Call for Support

The Norwegian School of Nature Life is committed to preserving and sharing the wisdom of Friluftsliv by creating a comprehensive digital library. This online repository will house a rich collection of articles, guides, and resources that delve into various aspects of Friluftsliv, making this invaluable knowledge accessible to enthusiasts worldwide.

We are also currently fundraising to purchase a van to transport our summer campers to and from their daily nature destinations.
